Officially certified by the Ghana Standards Authority for production and sale in Ghana.

The Volta Pad are locally designed and produced by a dedicated team of women. These women have been trained to undertake the cutting, sewing and health protocols in the pad manufacturing process. In addition to providing women and girls with accessible, affordable and sustainable menstrual pads – the Volta Pad project also provides employment and economic autonomy to the women who produce them. This will in turn promote economic growth for their families and communities at large as well as enhance confidence among school girls, keep them in school and decrease instances of abuse. Educational sessions on menstrual hygiene led by knowledgeable health care workers accompany every sale and distribution of Volta Pad. Going forward it’s our dream to supply over 10,000 girls in about 100 communities in the Volta Region with affordable reusable sanitary pads to help them manage their periods with dignity, keep them in school and prevent abusive behavior.

A New Community Owned Business for the Amenuveve, Inc. and the Woadze Tsatoe community.

Mission Statement

“Empowering women to have governance over their bodies through education and to enhance their everyday lives by providing reusable, affordable, sustainable and hygienic menstrual product.”

Enhance

Young women and adolescents in rural Ghanaian often cannot afford to purchase one-use menstrual hygiene products. Providing reusable, affordable and safe menstrual care products will positively impact their lives, provide women’s health education and increase comfort as well as productivity

Educate

Provide educational support to ensure that all stakeholders are knowledgeable about menstruation and alleviate any fears. A menstrual education program will be implemented by trained health care professionals in connection with the sale of Volta Pad

Empower

Without access to proper menstrual health, young women often do not attend work or school and are vulnerable relationships in exchange for purchasing menstrual pads. This leads to teenage pregnancy, sexual abuse, and sexually transmitted infections. As a result, young women often drop out of school and are unable to work. With affordable reusable menstrual care, women can comfortably go about their routine, whether it be work or school and refrain from unwanted relationships.

Economics

The Volta Pad will be produced by the sewers who have trained in the Amenuveve Sewing Apprentice program*.  This will create a much needed additional source of income for the community and stimulate further economic development.  One sewing room already exists in Tsatoe and another one is under construction in Woadze.

How to Fix The Pad

Menstrual Hygiene

  • Menstrual Hygiene is simply the process of keeping ones self clean during menstruation or menstrual period to avoid infection and other diseases
  • Good menstrual hygiene management plays a fundamental role in enabling women/girls reach their full potential
  • The negative impacts of lack of good menstrual health and hygiene cut across, so Volta Pad choose the affordable and eco friendly reusable pads to improve menstrual hygiene
  • To effectively manage their menstruation, girls/women require access to water, sanitation and affordable pads
  • Poor menstrual health and hygiene is exacerbating social and economic inequalities

There is a lack of knowledge on the Truth surrounding Menstruation

Menstruation is often considered a taboo subject.

Menstruation is a fundamental part of life, yet has negative associations of shame, embarrassment, and exclusion from particular activities during menstruation.
